South Gloucestershire

Deaf Association

The Hearing Impaired
Support Scheme

bullet

This is a registered charity. It consists of a group of trained volunteers who visit NHS hearing aid users in their own homes. They offer guidance for new users, carry out basic repairs, cleaning, provide batteries, give advice regarding local organisations and environmental equipment.

bullet

All volunteers are either hard of hearing themselves or live with someone who is, so their level of understanding of hearing impairment is very good.

bullet

The service is designed for people who have difficulty getting to local Audiology Departments but it only covers the North Bristol NHS Trust area as volunteers can only those who live within its boundaries. Also all patients who access hi>SS must have an NHS hearing aid.

bullet

We take referrals/requests from patients themselves, relatives, carers, GPs or other related organisations i.e. lipreading groups, Centre for Deaf People, South Gloucestershire Deaf Association etc.
