The Cotswold Rambling Club was formed to arrange walks and rambles in the local area. It is hoped that these walks will happen every month and will take in different places of interest. The walks are free and just for fun and are open to Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people. We hope you will join us next year during the first weekend in March. Already I have offers from people willing to organise walks in March, August and September in 2007. Should you be interested in arranging a walk please contact Hilary. hilary@hilarysutherland.co.uk . All you need is a pair of legs, good walking shoes and some waterproof clothing and it will be fun!!
Happy Christmas and don't forget to walk
off all that naughty food over Christmas! Please be aware: If you organise the walk then can you please write a few words to describe the day and send to graham.darley@sgda.co.uk then it can go on website. Even better, add some pictures too!! November 5th Walk to The Malverns 14 people came to our last walk for this year. We have been extremely lucky with the weather this year and this walk was no exception. All of us arrived early at the British Camp car park and the mist was just clearing up. We walked around the reservoir and up the British Camp and the views were just stunning on both sides, the English and Welsh sides. We also saw a cave and an Iron Age Fort. We finished our walk earlier than planned so some of us retired to a pub for a few drinks while the others went to a different car park and walked up another summit and again saw different views. Then it was time for our Sunday roast dinner. All of us agreed that the food was out of this world. After our meal we drove back home following a very spectacular sunset, it was like riding off in to the sunset. A wonderful day and a wonderful way to end our last walk this year. Hilary Sutherland
Sunday October 1st, Our Walk at Brean DownBefore the walk started, we had flash floods and several people were going very slowly on the Motorway. We waited in the lay-by for over 10 minutes, waiting for the rain to stop. We decided to risk the possibility of more rain. There was only 7 of us and we climbed up Brean Down. The sun came out and we had wonderful views of Weston, Brent Knoll, Uhill and over to Wales. We could see yachts racing on the sea. We could see the lighthouse very clearly, across the water at Penarth, near Cardiff. We came across a herd of cows and they were unusual. The cows did seem to leave a lot of cow pats all over the place, so many of us had smelly boots before the end of the walk! The bracing air and seeing the sea on both sides of Downs meant all of us went home with rosy cheeks. There is evidence of a possible Roman Temple on top of the Downs and this is in line with the Roman Baths at Bath. The remains of World War II lookout and barracks for the soldiers were interesting especially as there were details to read as we went round. We stopped to have our sandwiches, then walked back to Brean. We took a more energetic route this time but most of the time we had to watch we did not step in the cow pat!! To get back to the car park we had to go down 76 steps! Yes Bill counted them! We ended up having welcome cuppa in the little cafe and a chance to catch up on the gossip before departing for home. All the time on the walk the sun shone and it was hard to believe that on the way we had very hard rain!! Barbara Seager |
